EMS spokeswoman Keri Davids said a couple of people had reported witnessing a small helicopter falling to the sea and then, they responded quickly by sending a search and rescue team to the area. However, one hour later, there was still no single evidence found on the reported crash but the search still continues.
Many people claim that before the crash, they saw a light aircraft flying across the sea but it seemed that it lost control and descended with flame in the body.
Davids said that during the time of the reported crash, there were 3 cargo ships near the vicinity but no distress call had been made.
Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, spokesman of city disaster management, said they smell aviation fuel in the air of the place where the aircraft descended. He added that a report about the crash was received by Cape Town International Airport and they responded by sending a helicopter to confirm the situation.
Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesman, said they stationed two boats in the area to search but nothing had been found. He added that they will continue to monitor the area.
One of the witnesses Altena Swen said that she and her family witnessed a green light in the sea that disappeared. She added that they saw it coming. The craft looked like a shooting star or a rocket, green in color but they heard no sound until it disappeared in their view.
