The New York Times published an article in 2017 acknowledging the existence of unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, and the Pentagon’s efforts to keep information about them hidden from the public. This admission sparked a renewed interest in the topic and led to Congress mandating the release of two reports from the Pentagon on the subject.
The first report admitted that in 18 known instances, UFOs demonstrated an advanced technology that was unknown to human science and that the Pentagon had no information to explain it. However, the Pentagon spun the report to say that there was no evidence that the UFOs were alien spacecraft. The second report, released in October, admitted that many UFO sightings did not have conventional explanations and that some of them were possibly related to foreign spying or drones.
Despite these revelations, the Pentagon has continued to try to downplay the significance of the UFO topic and steer the media’s focus away from it.
