In Mali, West Africa, a southern part of Sahara Desert, lives a tribe called Dogon. Many beliefs that have no proof and badly needs to have an adequate answer. From the year 1931 to 1956, two anthropologists namely Drs. Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen, studied this tribe and recorded four Dogon tribe’s priests.
According to their traditions, a star named Sirius is said to be as companion star, that has 50 year elliptical orbit and said to be as heavy as half times the mass of our sun, for Sirius A and ninety-five percent of the mass of our sun for Sirius B. Sirius star is said to be invisible to a normal human eye. But the most mesmerizing part of this is that, how did these people who have lack of any kind of astronomical devices came with many information about the invisible star? In the year 1970, Sirius B wasn’t even photographed by a large telescope. Dogon astronomical lore is date back to 3200 B.C.
According to the oral traditions of Dogon, the tribe was visited by Nommos, a group people from Sirius system that lands to the Earth and falls to their place. Nommos people are said to be ugly, amphibious beings that resembled mermen and mermaids. Nommos people gave Dogon tribe information and knowledge about solar systems. They shared information about the different planets, that planet Jupiter has its four major moons, Saturn has rings and also that all planets orbits the sun. These facts were discovered by westerners after Galileo invented the telescope. The Nommos people are said to be landed in body of water which they released later inhabited. They could live both in land or water, but they are more preferable in the sea.
Pictures and tablets on oral stories portray Nommos people with large fish skins. Nommos people are said to be the saviors and spiritual guardians.
Carl Sagan, an American Astronomer, believes that the westerners and Europeans created the modern knowledge about the Dogon tribe culture. Sagan believes that if the Europeans came to Dogon tribe just to discuss more about astronomical matters and about the brightest stars.
But these beliefs however don’t explain the facts about Sirius configuration and how Dogon tribe knows how heavy Sirius B is.
The Dogon tribe is not the only people that have a connection with Nommos people. In some ethical stories, Nommos people also appear in Babylonia, Accadian and Sumerian myths. The Egyptian Goddess Isis, who is sometimes depicted as a mermaid-like created the connection between Sirius and the Egyptian culture.
