This sound is definitely not a train. When an entire city hears something, and then dozens of cities hears the same, we have to look outside the box.
Sounds like it could be a tunnel being ground out. Sounds a bit like the machine could have bit off more than it could chew hence the noise.

I am surprised that more people have not mentioned the possibility of the Large Hadron Collider as being the cause of all these strange noises. When you consider that the scientists there are smashing atoms together at almost the speed of light to create conditions similar to the big bang, I wonder if it could have somehow affected the earth's magnetic field. I sometime hear an extranger noise or sound specialy at 2, 3 or 4 am. This sound it´s like a jet engine sound. We live near of a military planes base but it doesn´t operate . This is a real mistery.
